the economy of 2007 in review

2007 was a very interesting year. Interesting as in the old Chinese curse "may you live in interesting times..." 

"2007 was a year when oil prices soared, home sales plunged and the U.S. dollar took a dive. But it was also a year when the U.S. economy performed well — at least until the last quarter — and the stock markets' major indexes are set to finish the year higher."

yet another BP related post

You might have noticed I've been posting a post a week recently, in relation to the spill in the gulf of Mexico, and news items discussing British Petrolium. It isn't that I've been hired by BP to do media work for them. This is, after all, a nice little blog with a select few readers (an elite, naturally, but as elites go, not a numerous crowd), and no person in his sane mind, regardless of the amount of U.S Dollars he spends on compensations and oil-contamination cleaning efforts, would start giving away money to anonymous blogs. The explanation is much simpler. As an investor, I've been interested in BP's stock for several months before the April spill. The decline of the stock presented, in my mind, a unique opportunity to buy an undervalued company (and i'm far from being a minority here), and as troubled companies shares tend to be volatile, the fact that I bought what in my mind is an amazingly cheap stock, with impressive profits in a not too distant fut...

שובו של גדול-מכדי-ליפול ?

דויטשה בנק עושה קולות בעייתיים, ו העולם הפיננסי כמרקחה . כתבתי את זה לפני כמעט 6 שנים ודעתי לא השתנתה מאז: יש לאסור בחקיקה את גדילתם של מוסדות פיננסים מעבר לגודל מסויים . בדיוק כמו החקיקה העוסקת במונופולים. בדיוק כמו כל חקיקה אחרת. בלעדי חקיקה כזו, במוקדם או במאוחר, התאגידים הפיננסיים יהיו כל-כך חזקים עד כי המדינות כבר לא יוכלו להציל אותם כשהם ייפלו. ואז, עם מערכת כלכלית שלמה בקריסה, נמצא עצמנו בונים כלכלה אחרת מהחורבות. זו כמובן אפשרות לגיטימית, אבל בדרך כלל, כאשר מערכת כלכלית שלמה קורסת, רווחתם של רבים מדי נפגעת, ולא אחת המשבר הכלכלי הופך למשבר מדיני ואף למלחמה. האומנם רווחתם של הבנקים עדיפה על רווחתם של בני-האדם ? האם כבר הגענו למצב שבו הבנקים הם לא רק גדולים-מכדי-ליפול אלא גם חזקים יותר ממדינות הלאום, והמצב איננו בר-תיקון ?
