Bank of Israel buys stocks

The media reports that the Bank of Israel has started investing in US-traded stocks, as a mean to diversify its investments portfolio. The idea of a central bank investing parts of the foreign-currency balance of a sovereign state in a stock market looks a bit odd at first glance, but when thinking about it, in a period of sovereign debt default fears, investing in the stocks of giant corporations isn't such a bad idea.
Between us, the probability of default in the case of Exxon, Macdonald's or Apple is significantly lower than the probability that some countries will not pay back their debts, and the question which country's word is good is not as clear as it used to be, after the last summer.  The fact that some giant companies stocks are traded in the U.S stocks does not make them American. The income flow of giants of the type mentioned above are today entirely global. Which means that the Bank of Israel has found a great way to try and achieve a reasonable yield at a time of low interest rates around the world, and a great way to spread the risk.
